The intention behind the saying?

So, I met with a friend of mine today who I haven't seen in a really long time and she just moved to Austin with her boyfriend. It was the first time meeting her boyfriend and while I was getting ready to meet them I was thinking about the saying "nice to meet you I have heard so much about you." And I got to thinking what exactly does "I have heard so much about you," supposed to mean? Who created that saying and was there a specific reason behind it? I am probably thinking too much about it but here are the few things I was thinking.

- It is supposed to intimidate the person it is being said to. Such as "ha, I have heard a lot about you lets see if you hold up to the expectations."

- or, small talk to elicit a first conversation. Such as how the conversation usually goes "Nice to meet you I have heard so much about you."..."oh really hopefully all good stuff and nothing bad." And everyone has a little chuckle because everyone thinks it's such a clever line when in actuality everyone follows up the first saying with the second.

- or, is it intended as a compliment. "Oh I have heard so much about you," as in I have heard wonderful things about you and I can't wait to get to know you because you seem like such a wonderful person.

So, think about it for a second and let me know how you intend the saying "I have heard so much about you", to come across to the recievee.
